A remote job will change your life

π΅ Ah the age-old corporate debateβ¦
Is work from home (WFH) better? Or is going into the office better?
Iβll tell you my answer, itβs WFH.
The benefits of having one are quite literally, life-changing.
Today, Iβll share a story from my workplace that highlights the difference between WFH life and the in-office life.
If you live within a 20-minute walk of your job, this doesnβt really apply to you.
This is for the 1 - 2 hour commuters.
WFH VS in office
On Feb 3, I got a company-wide email from our CEO:
Starting on March 6, employees will be required to work in the office 4 days a week instead of 3.
Minutes later, our head director sent a similar email but with one difference.
In her email, she said that my team - the product and technology team - didnβt need to follow the 4-day office rule.
Instead, we could WFH 4 days a week and come in once.
Now, youβre probably asking:
Wait a minute Michael, why does your team get special treatment?
Without going into too much detail, being in tech played a big factor.
Tech teams typically have a remote-friendly culture.
But the real reason Iβm telling you this story?
Because once that email was out, the entire company was buzzing about it.
And after hearing about my co-workersβ commute struggles, I realized just how much the office can drain your time.
The office is a time life drainer
The problem isnβt the office itself, itβs the commute.
Our office is beautiful, we have a library, massage chairs, and a gaming room.
But even all that isnβt worth the commute stress.
Donβt believe me?
Hereβs my co-workerβs daily routine looks like:
Wake up at 6:20 AM
Spend 1 hour getting ready
Leave the house by 7:20
Catch a 30-minute bus ride by 7:30
Get to the subway station by 8:00
Stand in a packed subway for 1 hour
Get to the office at 9:00
Work until 4 or 5 PM
Commute another 1 - 2 hours home
Finally get home by 7:00 PM
Repeat, Mon - Thurs
Thatβs 4+ extra hours every single day.
You could use that time to meal prep, work out, do a hobby, etc. Instead, youβre wasting it on commute.
This doesnβt have to be your life though.
Most people think the escape is entrepreneurship.
But you CAN have a 9-5 that doesnβt feel like one.
The beauty of remote work
Hereβs what my WFH routine looks like:
Wake up at 8:30 AM
Spend 10 minutes making breakfast
Read a book (or doom-scroll TikTok) until 9:00
Deep-work until 12:00
Have lunch from 12:00 - 1:00
Walk to my nearby cafe
Return home by 1:30 or 2:00
Meetings (if any) until 2:00
Log off at 3:00 or 4:00
My favorite part? My midday walk.
Being able to step outside, enjoy the fresh air, and come back, while still on the clock, is true freedom.
Donβt get me wrong, I still like going into office once a week, but I like it because I have the freedom to choose.
Iβm not being forced, thatβs the difference.
Now ask yourself, which daily routine do you want for the next 40+ years of your career?
