Hi networkers,

Getting fired is pretty bad. But you know what’s worse? Getting fired virtually.

Last week, Bell did just this when they suddenly laid off their employees in an online meeting.

In today’s article, we’ll be going over the details of this story and explaining why it’s important to not fall for the β€œloyalty” trap.

Here’s the route for today

TOPIC
Bell Fires 400+ Employees Virtually

Bell, Canada’s largest telecommunication company made headlines last week when they fired hundreds of their workers.

Now, this isn’t the first time Bell has done mass layoffs.

But what makes this one different is how they did it.

According to the worker’s union, about 400+ employees were let go virtually in a 10-minute team meeting.

And to top that off, they weren’t even able to unmute their mics to ask questions. Bell Let’s Talk? More like Bell Let’s Not Talk.

Bell has since addressed the union’s anger and is committed to being more transparent moving forward.

You can read more about the story in the links above, but we’ll next address an underlying lesson here, which is that:

When it comes to your career, loyalty is not a two-way street.

Many of those employees dedicated years to Bell, only to be let go in a rather humiliating way.

Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of amazing companies out there with great cultures, but don’t get too comfortable.

Those same companies can and will drop you for any reason, so it’s only fair that you have a backup plan right?

Don’t assume your hard work creates a safety net. Instead, accept the possibility of a worst-case scenario, aka - a sudden layoff.

By accepting that, you can then prepare for it, which leads to my advice…

My advice to you:

No matter how great of a position you find yourself in, it never hurts to have a backup plan.

Always continue networking with people, and applying to any interesting roles you come across.

Make it a habit so that if you do find yourself jobless, you’ll at least have a few prospects to reach out to.

See you next Tuesday 🀝
