Last week, I had a chance to sit down and interview my friend Anthony.
I don’t often do interviews, but I really wanted to share his experience with you.
Anthony is a 4th year University student at the Schulich School of Business, and he has a pretty good track record of landing offers.
In our recording, Anthony drops some gems when it comes to finding, and securing opportunities in this rough market.

Question: "You were specializing in marketing and you decided to pivot into sales. What was that like what was the catalyst and what made you change your mind or interests?"
I realized the practical application of marketing wasn't for me, especially the creative side. My first internship involved networking and sales aspects which I enjoyed more.
This led me to a sales role at Equitable Bank, which felt like a better fit for my personality. Sales combines what I'm good at with what I enjoy doing.
Question: "Can you explain what McKenzie investment does exactly. And what does a typical like day to day or week to week look like for you?"
McKenzie Investments is a wealth management firm that sells mutual funds and ETFs through financial advisors at banks.
In my retail sales role, I work to make advisors aware of our funds, providing them with performance data and portfolio information obtained from portfolio managers.
It's been a great learning experience about the industry and market perspectives, especially interacting with experienced professionals.
Question: "How exactly did you get your first internship? The first one is the always hardest.
I felt pressure going into third year without an internship. My first one came through a mix of luck and initiative while I was working part-time at a coffee shop.
The CEO of the local Chamber of Commerce came in, and I struck up a conversation after recognizing him, mentioning I was a business student looking for opportunities.
It turned out he was hiring an intern. After following up via email based on his business card, I interviewed and got the job on the spot.
Question: "How did you go about finding your other internships after the first one? Was it also like more networking base, or did you go down the code application route?"
It was a mix of networking and direct applications. For EQ Bank, I initially didn't get a summer role I applied for (found via networking), but I reapplied for the same role in the fall term.
This time, I reached out directly to the recruiter via LinkedIn referencing my previous application, which helped secure the position.
For McKenzie Investments, I applied online but also cold-messaged a previous intern on LinkedIn for a coffee chat. That conversation provided insights and led to an internal referral to the hiring manager.
Question: "What was your approach when it came to cold emailing or messaging people? Why did you choose to contact a past intern instead of a hiring manager, and what did you say?"
I found reaching out to someone closer to my target role, like a past intern, was more effective. They share common ground, are usually more accessible, and can offer relevant advice.
If you build rapport, they might refer you internally. My approach was to express genuine interest in learning about their specific experience in the role and at the company, focusing on curiosity rather than immediately asking for a job or referral.
