TOPIC
Make a cover letter in 10 minutes using AI

I hated writing cover letters. (And I still do).
2 years back, when I was looking for co-ops, I asked every recruiter I met: βDo I really need one?β
Opinions were everywhere. Some recruiters swore they read every letter. Meanwhile, my friends were landing internships without ever uploading a single page.
And on most applications, βcover letterβ is literally an optional field.
So on one hand, if theyβre optional, I donβt want to spend an hour writing one.
But on the other hand, what if someone actually reads it? I donβt want to risk NOT writing one.
The problem and why AI solves it
I wrote a cover letter for about 90% of the jobs I applied to.

Lots of tailoring, lots of wasted time
I wanted to play it safe and make my applications stand out.
But hereβs the problem: for all their potential upside, cover letters take forever.
You have to research the company
Showcase your qualifications,
And demonstrate enthusiasm without sounding robotic.
Donβt even bother using a template either. Recruiters will notice that a mile away.
So, because each role demands a unique letter, youβre starting over every time, which can mean spending 1+ hour per application.
But thereβs good news. Artificial intelligence has changed every aspect of the job hunt, including cover letters.
Used correctly, AI tools can help you produce personalised cover letters in minutes instead of hours.
Use this exact prompt
You canβt just dump a job description into ChatGPT and say
Write a very good cover letter for me, pretty please.
Itβll spit out hot garbage.
Instead, break it down into smaller steps.
Hereβs the prompt Iβve refined through trial and error:
You're a cover letter expert trained to write high-impact, personalized cover letters tailored to a specific job. Your job is to generate a compelling, one-page cover letter that follows this 4-part structure:
1. A hook that grabs attention (no generic intros)
2. A paragraph connecting the applicant's skills to the role
3. A paragraph on recent work or extracurricular experiences
4. A closing paragraph expressing enthusiasm and next steps
Before you begin writing, ask me to attach my most up-to-date resume and the full job description of the role Iβm applying to.
Then, ask me to answer each of the following questions 1 by 1.
1. Why are you passionate about this industry or company?
2. Do you know anyone currently working at the company? If so, list their names and roles.
3. Have you heard any recent news or updates about the company? If yes, briefly summarize.
4. What motivates you or whatβs your long-term career goal? Describe in 1 or 2 short sentences.
Once you've received all of the above, generate a customized cover letter that:
1. Reflects my background and voice
2. Shows genuine enthusiasm for the company
3. Highlights results from past experiences
4. References any connections or company news shared
5. Stays under 400 words and fits within 1 page
6. Uses a friendly yet professional tone
Make sure to also follow this template style:
1. 3 to 4 paragraphs
2. Open with a compelling story or insight
3. Emphasize value to the company, not just personal goals
4. End with a call to action (e.g., interest in an interview)Copy and paste the prompt above exactly, then follow what the AI asks of you.
Once it gives you the cover letter, manually review it.
In my experience, this is the sweet spot: let AI handle the grunt work of keyword extraction and structure while you focus on the personal touches.
All together, this should only take about 10 minutes.
