More successful cold emails

We got another round of successful cold emails this week!
It looks like the responses were overwhelmingly positive to last week’s article, so, I’m sharing more.

This time though, we’ll focus on an out-of-the box idea most people don’t do.
Intro videos.
It may not sound intuitive since emails are written, but making intro videos can be a powerful way to stand out.
Here’s how I made mine.
The successful email
Below is the person I emailed.

Unlike the previous person though, we didn’t have anything specific in common. (Feel free to refer to the last article to know what I mean by this.)
So, what do you do when there’s not a clear point of interest to relate to?
You go ahead and write the email anyways, but you do it with a twist.
Just because there’s nothing specific in common with you and the other person shouldn’t stop you from hitting send.
The main goal is to catch their attention right?
This is where intro videos come in.
Why and how to create a intro video
Intro videos are great because most people don’t expect them.
This surprise, in and of itself, can be enough to get them to reply (or at least read) your email.
But on top of that, they really show your personality.
Letting the other person see your face and hear your voice really humanizes the networking experience.
This is how I made mine.
First, I used loom.
It’s a video editing software that lets you screen record anything and attaches your face cam to the screen.

Their free plan is pretty generous (25 videos, 5 min limits). I have yet to find any other tool that works as good.
Second, I picked a goal.
No point in sending a video if you’re just rambling.
I set strict guidelines for my video.
It had to be 1 - 2 min max
Talk enough about the other person
Briefly showcase myself
My intro video scripts are stupidly simple and they go something like:
Hey [name]! I came across your profile and thought it was cool how [describe an achievement or project of theirs]. I’m Michael and I [explain what you do].
Would love to chat further!
See? Simple right, saying this script above should take no more than 2 minutes.
Spend any longer, and they’ll probably skip the video. Remember, people are busy.
Last but not least, I made it optional.
Be careful how you mention your intro video in the email.
People won’t watch it if you make it feel like a request, you have to leave it open-ended.
This is how I bring up an intro video:

Notice the wording?
I’m giving full control in this scenario. From experience, when you give someone the decision making wheels, they usually steer it in your direction.
The results
So, what was her reply?
I didn’t hear anything for 3 days, so I followed up on LinkedIn, and got this:

Plus this email:

As you can see, the video stood out!
And that’s how you create and send an intro video in your cold emails! When done right, they can really catch attention.
The only downside is that they’re a time consuming to make, so try to reserve this strategy for people you really really want to chat with.
That’s all for today. If you enjoyed this post, share it with a friend!
If they subscribe, I’ll send you a interview guide!

See you next Tuesday 🤝
