TOPIC
Never get ghosted again

It’s no secret that cold emails are how you land coffee chats, referrals and jobs.
And by now I sound like a broken record given how often I say this…
But I see dozens of students pour time into messages that never get replies.
They treat every channel the same and forget that the person on the other end has their own priorities. Let’s change that.
I came across a 2-part framework recently and just had to share it with you.
Here’s how it works.
Part 1: Signal & Impact
Noise vs Signal - LinkedIn DMs are noise. Your note gets buried under 100 other messages asking the recruiter the same thing.
Emails are signals: they aren’t spammed as often, feel more personal and most people open them daily.
Translation: stop sliding into DMs and start sending thoughtful emails.
Apathy vs Impact - Apathy is asking for a referral right away with zero genuine interest.
Impact means giving value first: study what the other person cares about and help them get there.
Ask questions that make them think, not copy‑pasted ones.
When you combine the right channel with a valuable message, replies follow.
A quick way to apply this:
Do your homework. Scan their recent posts, mission statements or projects and find something that genuinely excites you.
Send an email with a clear subject line. Adding “Re:” can boost open rates.
Lead with them, not you. Open with a specific compliment or insight about their work, then connect it to how you can help.
Offer an easy next step. Suggest a 15‑minute call and provide your availability.
Part 2: The RICE Checklist
Picking the right channel and having impact is a great start, but how do you actually influence someone to respond?
Use the RICE framework.
Before you hit send, run your message through this four‑point checklist.
Reward: People rarely help just to be nice. They help when it helps them too. Ask, “what problem am I solving for them?”
For example, a recruiter wants to fill roles quickly. Instead of “I’d love to work at X,” try “I noticed you’re hiring a data analyst. I recently did similar work using PowerBI and can share dashboards if that helps.”
Ideology: Does your message reflect what they believe in?
If a company is betting big on AI, mention the GPT‑powered workflow you built to summarize reports five times faster. Aligning with their ideology shows you “get” them.
Coercion: This isn’t about threats; it’s about urgency. What pain or inconvenience can you remove?
A hiring manager buried under 300 resumes will appreciate a 90‑second video overview of your portfolio.
Ego: Everyone wants to feel important. Tap into what they want to be known for.
When reaching out to a senior PM who mentors others, instead of asking for a job, write: “Your post on product roadmaps helped me rethink my own. I’d love to hear how you handle prioritization when stakeholders disagree.”
If your email doesn’t hit at least two of these, rework it until it does.
A message that offers a clear reward, aligns with their values, removes pain and strokes their ego is irresistibly persuasive.
The big picture
Use the Signal + Impact framework to choose where and how you reach out.
Then, polish it with the RICE checklist.
You’ll go from being ignored to starting conversations worth having.
That’s all for today. If you enjoyed this post, share it with a friend!
If they subscribe, I’ll send you a coffee chat guide!
