TOPIC
Shopify internship in <24 hours

A student from the University of Waterloo landed her dream internship at Shopify!
And the craziest part wasnβt:
How she did it
Or that she got the offer in under 24 hours
It was the fact that the job didnβt even exist!
The company created it just for her.
I saw this story on LinkedIn and just had to share it.
Itβs a perfect example of how posting on LinkedIn leads to opportunities!
Juliaβs story
Meet Julia Fedorin, a student at the University of Waterloo.
I came across her after she gave me a shoutout in this LinkedIn post.
Since then, Iβve been following her journey.
Itβs a unique one unlike most others.
You see, like any other student, Julia was searching for an internship.
However, she chose to take a different approach, she chose to βjob search in public.β
In the world of product, we coin this term:
Building in public
The idea is simple.
If youβre developing a phone app, its success depends on how many users you can get to download it.
If you build in private, no one will know about the app.
But if you document your development on social media, youβll attract users naturally.
Julia applied the same concept to job searching.
Instead of simply sending cold applications, she chose to document her job search on LinkedIn!
Hereβs why it worked.
LinkedIn is the new resume
Posting regularly on LinkedIn isnβt just a way to get your voice in front of companies.
Itβs your new online resume, and Julia harnessed this power.
Just check out some of her posts!
In this one, she promoted herself to Abobe.

and in this one, she told her story to Microsoft

Each time she posted, she was spreading her digital voice.
Unlike resumes that get seen once, your posts on LinkedIn live on, and the more you post, the more you grow.
It was a stacking affect, as Julia continued to post, she was catching more eyes.
Until eventually, she posted this:

And the rest was history.

Soon, her Shopify post blew up.
On Twitter/X:
The CEO, replied to it.
The COO said βyouβre hired!β
On LinkedIn
The head of marketing reposted!
Shopify liked Julia so much, that despite not having an opening for marketing interns, they made one just for her!
And in less than 24 hours, Julia became the 1st and only marketing intern at Shopify.
The takeaway
Companies donβt just care about a stellar resume, thatβs the bare minimum.
What theyβre really looking for is a history of passion projects.
They want to see what youβve created, why you created it, and itβs impacts.
Anyone can βclaimβ theyβre interested in something.
But you need to PROVE why.
Thatβs why Iβm so for posting online, it creates a proven track record that does the talking for you.
For Julia, her creative videos were evidence of her passion, and Shopify saw that.
If you want the same results, start posting on LinkedIn (or Twitter/X) today!
Job search in public, and youβll open doors you never knew existed.
Iβll personally be meeting Julia later this month.
Stay tuned for our conversation and hear directly from her!
Thatβs all for today. If you enjoyed this post, share it with a friend!
If they subscribe, Iβll send you a coffee chat guide!
See you next Tuesday π€
