Tailoring Your Resume

Below are all the steps I take when I tailor my resume.
For this example, weβll be looking at a business data analyst role for KPMG that I found here.
Step #1 - The Right Format
Most resumes go through an ATS system. This is where a lot of them are rejected before they ever reach a recruiter.
Why? Two reasons, either the formatting is off, or there arenβt enough keywords.
For step 1, make sure your resume is in the M&A format. It is a universally preferred resume structure.
To format your resume, reference this example. Itβs a pretty comprehensive walkthrough.
Step #2 - Finding Keywords
Now that we have the correct format, we need to pass the keyword check.
To find my keywords, I looked at two areas on their job page: What You Will Do & Qualifications.
I used to look for keywords manually but now with AI we can significantly speed this up.
To do this we will use ChatGPT to our advantage. Open up ChatGPT and type in the following prompt.
βI want you to analyze a job description and make a table of all active keywords from it. The table will have 2 columns. The left column will list soft skills, and the right column will list technical skills.β

Once entered, you should have something like this:

Step #3 - Tailor Bullet Points
Awesome, you got the keywords you need to pass the ATS system. Now for the final step, put them into your bullet points.
Iβm sure most of us are aware of the STAR method, that is:
Situation, Task, Action, Result
But instead of figuring out how to write these, we can use a ChatGPT prompt to have it create them for us!
Hereβs a prompt I made that you can copy:
I want you to create a resume-style bullet point using the STAR method (situation, task, action, result). I will tell you the context for each letter, then you will create one bullet point that contains the STAR method and any keywords from the table that are appropriate. Please also make sure the bullet point is no longer than 2 lines of text.
Using this prompt, I got this bullet point:

As you can see, the bullet point is brief, and contains the necessary keywords!
But of course, AI isnβt perfect (at least not yet). Thatβs why I always double-check the sentences and change the wording around if needed.
This entire process took me about 10 minutes and ChatGPT saves your log history, so you can reuse these prompts for other jobs!
